Plate armor (armor class 2 in D&D) was a relatively recent historical development. It only came into wide usage around 1400 ACE.
Even after the development of plates, chain mail continued to be used in certain parts of the body, such as the crotch. Plate armor is therefore polyarmorous, despite its monoarmorous appearance.
